What to do in the immediate aftermath of a crash
The following advice concerns what accident victims should do soon after some of the most common car accidents. Each individual accident is unique. Contact a car accident attorney at the office of Brian Brandt as soon as possible to discuss the details of your specific accident:
- Call the police – You will want to have an official report of what happened. We can secure the crash report for you, free of charge.
- Seek medical attention – Even if you feel fine, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible or visit the emergency room. If an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or another medical professional is at the scene, let that person examine you. You need to show the insurance company you took your injuries seriously right from the start.
- Talk to the driver – Make sure you get the following information from the other driver – full name, address, driver’s license number, insurance information and license plate number. Do not make any statements about the cause of the accident to the other driver or his or her insurance company. Remember, anything you say will be used against you by insurance companies to deny your claim or reduce compensation.
- Interview witnesses – Witness statements can be critical evidence supporting your accident claim. Get full names, addresses and phone numbers from anyone who saw the accident.

- Call your insurance company – Tell your insurance company you have been involved in a car accident. Stick to the basic facts. Don’t offer your opinion about what happened, because your statements, even to your own insurance company, may hurt your claim.
- Don’t offer any written or recorded statements to the insurance company – If you’re contacted by the insurance company for the at fault driver, don’t offer any comments.
