5 Ways Human Bodies Weren’t Designed to Survive Car Crashes

Meet Graham. He is “the only person to survive our roads.” Graham was created by a group of specialists: a road safety engineer, a trauma surgeon and a 3D artist; in conjunction with Australian government road safety agencies. Their goal was to imagine how a human body would have to evolve to be able to withstand the force of a car accident and to show us just how susceptible we are to injury as drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

There are a few big differences between Graham and ourselves. Here are five ways Graham’s body has evolved to survive a vehicle collision:

1. Brain

A thin layer of cerebrospinal fluid is the only thing separating our brain from our skull. In a serious car accident, our brain can collide with the skull that is supposed to be there to protect it. This can cause a concussion, nerve damage, or a traumatic brain injury.

2. Neck

The human neck is not strong enough to withstand the force of a car accident. There is no protection from the sharp impact of a car crash.

3. Ribs

Our rib cage is built to protect our organs, but it is not enough. Graham’s rib cage has extra padding between the ribs to absorb the impact of an accident.

Graham doesn’t only look at injuries in a car. Parts of his body, specifically the legs, knees and feet have evolved to withstand being hit by a car as a pedestrian.

4. Knees

Our knees can only bend in one direction. Graham’s knees bend backward and forward to better absorb the shock of a crash.

5. Legs and Feet

Graham’s feet are significantly longer than our own because when a pedestrian is in danger of being hit by a car, the best thing for them to do is to just jump out of the way of the vehicle completely. Graham’s

Unfortunately for us, we are not built like Graham. Our bodies are not equipped to handle the impact of a car crash. If you have been involved in a car accident, the resulting injuries could be devastating.
